Feeding Chickens
A chicken’s natural diet consists of cereals, seeds, berries, plants and various small creatures, such as worms, slugs and snails. When chickens are allowed to scratch around freely, they will eat anything and will decide for themselves what they need. For chickens that are kept in a coop, it is essential that they are fed a varied diet to keep them in peak condition. Given that these chickens cannot decide for themselves what to eat it is necessary to supply sensible, well-balanced feed of good quality. Teurlings offers a full range of chicken feed for all phases of life. Besides a complete feed, chickens also need to have access to grit (source of calcium for a strong eggshell), stomach stones (for grinding the feed in the gizzard) and a daily supply of fresh drinking water.

Complete animal feed for chickens
Complete feed for chickens is available in pellet form and as a flour. The advantage of a complete poultry pellet is that chickens cannot pick and choose what to eat and instead ingest all the nutrients they need via the pellet. Flour has the advantage that chickens spend longer foraging, so they are less likely to become bored and put on too much weight. However, flour makes more of a mess than pellets. Flour can be given dry or moistened, but bear in mind that moistened laying flour cannot be left for long in the feeding trough.
Teurlings complete chicken feed contains a balanced ratio of all the essential building blocks. Teurlings laying / poultry pellets stimulate egg production and strong eggshells. The balanced mix of vitamins and minerals promotes good general health in chickens.
For smaller ornamental breeds, Teurlings recommends that you use Teurlings ornamental fowl pellets, possibly supplemented with poultry grain. The diameter of the ornamental fowl pellet is smaller than that of the poultry pellet and therefore better suited to smaller breeds of chicken. Poultry grain has a finer structure than mixed corn or poultry mix.

Complementary animal feed for chickens
In addition to a complete feed, a mix of cereals and seeds can be supplied as a supplement. Teurlings cereal mixes satisfy the foraging needs of chickens. Teurlings recommends feed cereal mixes up to a maximum of 25% of the total daily feed requirement.
